A Childcare Center Where Children Can Learn, Play, and Grow

Our work at MMP School is very much in line with the vision of our founder, world-renowned early childhood expert and author, Beverly Kovach, MN. Ms. Kovach, author of Being with Babies and Toddlers, is one of two Pikler® certified teacher trainers and is a RIE® and a Montessori Mentor Teacher Instructor.

Initially a nurse and later a family counselor by profession (she co- founded the first crisis center in Charleston, SC), Beverly became increasingly dissatisfied with daycare options for her two young children. Her frustration quickly evolved into a passion for creating a better solution – a high quality approach to infant and childcare that meets the challenges of a group setting. And so the vision for MMP School was born.

In 1998, Beverly’s daughter, Nicole Vigliotti, and her husband David took over management and operations of the school, and further developed the infant and professional/parent training programs. Today, MMP School continues to house Little Learner’s Lodge (our infant program) and Montessori of Mount Pleasant (our primary program) as an independent private preschool, PLUS our center trains other early childhood educators in the Pikler ™, RIE™ and Montessori methods.

We are committed to continuing to grow, develop, and research best practices in supporting the well-being of young children and their providers.

“You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself.”

Galileo Galilei

Nestled in the historic Old Village area of Mount Pleasant SC, our schoolhouse is situated across from protected pristine marsh and is a block from the heart of the village, which features an old-time pharmacy, local bakery, resource library and more.
Our recent renovation enabled us to bring our infants, toddlers and primary students all under one roof – which means every day, your child is learning to increasingly care for (and learn from) other children.

“Few are those who see with their own eyes and feel with their own hearts.”

Albert Einstein

Designed to offer bright open spaces and to conserve water and energy, our new facility features:

a calm, quiet dedicated infant room

organic garden-to-table lunch program

certified natural wildlife habitat nature walks led by a certified master naturalist

an ecology and science specialized center

a school store that offers the opportunity to explore commerce

outings to neighborhood businesses like the community bakery, library, firehouse and fishing docks.

Inside, our classroom community is arranged very much like a home environment, where babies and older children have opportunities to interact and care for one another throughout the day. The adjoining rooms provide natural light while the kitchen and garden areas are always open for discovery, learning and play.

Children under two years are supported with primary and continuity of care. Educarers are trained in RIE® and Pikler® and remain with their small group during transitions.

The toddler community is blended with opportunities to learn indoors and out. Certified Montessori teachers provide individual lessons while also respecting learning through free play.

An authentic Montessori experience incorporating Orton-Gillingham, culinary arts, gardening, ecology along with Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Math and Science.

If you're a parent, teacher, grandparent, or just enjoy being with young children then this is an absolute MUST-HAVE!! Beverly is a passionate, experienced, and knowledgeable professional in the field. As a Montessori-trained toddler teacher with a Master's degree in education, I recommend this book to many parents and even my own family and friends. own her other book "Being with Babies" which I used when I took my infant/toddler Montessori training and it is a phenomenal resource as well.

Many of our caregivers are trained in RIE@- a respectful approach to infant caregiving. This guide is a great introduction to infant care and especially helpful when we are unable to get teachers time off to attend a training. New teachers are able to get a foundational understanding to help put Dr. Emmi Pikler's and Dr. Maria Montessori's philosophy into action in center base care. Having teachers demonstrate by video is a nice touch. We are using this for beginning trainings.

I'd love this series to be required viewing for all infant and toddler caregivers. Beverly Kovach's words of wisdom on what is truly important for the youngest children (primary caregiving, unhurried, respectful, relationship-building caregiving routines as the curriculum) will go far in improving the quality of care provided for little ones. I highly recommend these videos!

I have really enjoyed watching Being With Infants. My husband and I try our best to follow Magda Gerber's approach and this was a great reminder for me. I loved being able to see Magda's advice be put in to practice to learn what it really means to SLOW DOWN. I would highly recommend this to parents who are trying to follow a RIE approach.

When we decided to move to Mount Pleasant SC from Connecticut in 2013 we knew that we needed to find child care for our 2-year-old son. It was clear that MMP was the right choice for our family after we toured the facility and met with David and Megan. Their due diligence in understanding if the program would be right for our family first not only reassured us that we were making the right decision for our son, it cemented our own beliefs behind the concept that what we are doing at home needs to complement what our child is doing at school. A symbiotic relationship of sorts would be most beneficial for the growth of our son. We were fortunate that a spot opened up and we were able to join the program quickly. Hands down the best decision we have made. Our son is thriving and sadly in his last year at the school as he'll be graduating.

The entire staff at MMP is beyond wonderful, their demeanor is top notch and their certifications and education around early childhood is evident. The facility is calming and nurturing and soothing. I cannot recommend this program more.
Thank you MMP for making the past three years so wonderful.
